Loring Air Force Base, in remote northern Maine, was shuttered long ago, but many remember the warrior for whom it was named. Charles J. Loring Jr. was a superb fighter pilot. He fought in Europe and then in Korea, where he died in a blaze of glory. Bom in Portland, Maine, Loring graduated from a Catholic school there and began a promising career as a professional boxer.
