By Feb. 14, a total of 3,958 Americans had died in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The total includes 3,950 troops and eight Department of Defense civilians. Of these deaths, 3,224 were killed in action with the enemy while 734 died in noncombat incidents. There have been 29,133 troops wounded in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom. This number includes 16,120 who were wounded and returned to duty within 72 hours and 13,013 who were unable to return to duty quickly.
