By March 19, a total of 4,261 Americans had died in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The total includes 4,250 troops and 11 Department of Defense civilians. Of these deaths, 3,425 were killed in action with the enemy while 836 died in noncombat incidents.rnThere have been 31,131 troops wounded in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom. This number includes 17,433 who were wounded and returned to duty within 72 hours and 13,698 who were unable to return to duty quickly.
