When an individual develops a subconjunctival haemorrhage, he/she may first find out about it when someone asks ‘What happened to your eye?’ It is only recently that consideration has been given to factors responsible for this dramatic but relatively asymptomatic condition. Review of sufferers between the ages of 51 and 70 years revealed that in 77.7% it was due to trauma or contact lens-induced injury (Ophthalmologica 2010; 224: 133–7). In 22.3% of patients between the ages of 0 and 40 years, the cause was not defined, whereas in those between the ages of 61 and 94 years 47.5% of cases were associated with hypertension. Diabetes mellitus was a factor in another 13.1%. As with younger patients, the cause was not defined in another 39.4%. A limitation of this study is that there is no information on the mechanism whereby this range of conditions should be linked to subconjunctival haemorrhage.
