EIB Takes a Shine to ITPC

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is considering a loan worth EUR 135 million for the Itezhi Tezhi Power Corporationrn(ITPC), a joint venture between the Zam-bian Electricity Supply Company (Zesco) and Tata Africa Holdings Ltd. The money would go towards building a 120 MW dam at Itezh Tezhi on the Kafue river, which will cost an estimated USD 230 million. The boss of ITPC, Robert Nsamba, hopes the power plant will be in operation by 2014. The loan under discussion with the EIG also includes funding for the construction of 220 kV/330 kV transmission lines some 260 km in length for Zesco (the official dealing with the EIB at Zesco is Julius Kampamba, acting senior manager for transmission development).
