Foreign minister Lamamra dreams of GERD summit in Algiers

In addition to the United Arab Emirates' initiative tomediate between Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan in theirdispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam(GERD) project (AI, 30/04/21), Algerian foreign ministerRamtane Lamamra has taken his own tentative steps asan intermediary and is considering holding a meeting inAlgiers. Lamamra spoke to his Egyptian, Ethiopian, andSudanese counterparts about the idea when on a visit tothe three Nile Basin countries in August. It is not certainthat Egypt will be on board the plan, given its reluctanceto see Algeria get involved in the regionaldispute. Ethiopia is also reluctant to accept the Algiersproject. At the end of August, Addis Ababa temporarilyclosed its embassy in Algiers after only four years ofexistence. Algiers is also planning to host the ArabLeague, whose members include Egypt and Sudan, inMarch 2022.
