Against a backdrop of water shortages and as the trial of former water resources ministers gets underway, the Algerian Energy Co, a subsidiary of Sonatrach, is searching for new engineering partners to replace the Singapore company Hyflux. While Algeria is facing a new wave of water cuts, the Algerian Energy Co (AEC) is struggling to find the right solution to restore its desalination plants. AEC, a wholly owned subsidiary of the state-owned oil giant Sonatrach, has extended the deadline for applications to its call for tenders for the renovation of some of its 10 reverse osmosis plants (out of 11 in total). Candidates, who had until 7 July to apply, will now have until 2 August. Proof that AEC is wavering and has doubts that it can save all of its plants can be seen by the fact that is has asked candidates to propose renovation solutions that are coupled with operation and maintenance contracts, as well as the turnkey creation of new plants, again with their subsequent operation guaranteed.
