Chamber of mines wants to assess Kabila's code

The members of the DRC's chamber of mines, which represents the mining industry within the Congolese employers' federation FEC, are reportedly discussing an option to assess the country's current mining laws. The as yet unconfirmed project would consist of reviewing a series of changes made to the country's mining code in March 2018 in order to weigh up their pros and cons. The 2018 version of the code was not met with open arms by mining groups, who have specific concerns about the rise in taxes from 2% to 3.5% of their turnover for "classic" minerals and up to 10% for "strategic" minerals, as well as the reduction from 10 to five years on contract stability. Many mining firms feel that the new code offers little incentive, or even acts as a disincentive, for investors and could see the DRC loose out to other mining nations.
