China Merchants steps up maritime operations in Djibouti

The Chinese maritime transport giant Sinotrans has firmly nailed its colours to the port of Djibouti, the head of its subsidiary in the country, Luby Liu, having recently increased its capital sixty-fold. The logistics company has been present in Djibouti for several years, but this major up-scaling is likely to establish Sinotrans as a central player in the territorial waters and on the highways of the Horn. Since 2017, Sinotrans has been under the ownership of the stateowned China Merchants Holdings, which holds complete sway over Djibouti's port sector.
