Minergy Coal gets off to difficult start amid South African lockdown

The coronavirus crisis has disrupted the best-laid plans of Botswana's Minergy Coal, which owns the Masama coal project located some 70 km north of Gaborone. The mine went into production in the summer of 2019, but the junior run by the South African Morné Du Plessis has had to revise down its production forecasts and is now aiming to mine just 60,000 tonnes of coal a month. Prior to the pandemic, Minergy had expected to achieve its monthly target of 80,000 tonnes a month by July, 90% of which was earmarked for export to neighbouring South Africa.
