ALGERIA After ENI, Sonatrach aims to fill coffers from sales to Enel

According to our information, it is understood that the state-owned Sonatrach will soon be renewing its gas sale contract with Enel, 25% controlled by the Italian state. This should cover the sale of 4 billion cubic meters of gas per annum, as under the current terms, although the renewal period is yet to be determined. Last month, Sonatrach renewed its contract with Italian major ENI for a 10-year period. The gas for both contracts should be exported via the Transmed pipeline that runs through Tunisia before heading across to the Italian coastline (AEI 841). With ENI buying nearly 16 billion cubic meters of gas per year from Sonatrach and Italian firm Edison importing another billion, the renewal of this contract will keep Algeria’s gas exports to Italy at an annual 21 billion cubic meters. Italy represented nearly 45% of Algeria’s total gas sales for 2018. Sonatrach’s figures show Algeria exported 51.8 billion cubic meters of gas in 2018, 38.4 billion of which via the three trans-Mediterranean pipelines.
