Washington, D.C. is a city of beauty and strength where the galvanized power of a nation keeps it progressive and attractive to a worldwide audience. Since its creation in 1791, the District has undergone numerous transformations in leadership, laws, challenges and victories. Even the facilities themselves — from the placing of the District's boundary stones (1791-92) to the burning of the Capitol, U.S. Treasury and the White House during the War of 1812 — have in some ways become the symbols of the nation's ability to overcome, rebuild and expand.
