On first impression this book is doing for early US aviation, what J M Bruce's British Aeroplanes 1914-1918 (Putnam. 1957) did for the British, and then some. In compiling the work over a period of 60 years, the author has made every attempt to go back to original sources, such as US Government documents and record cards. Despite acknowledged difficulties in obtaining source material, he has compiled a fascinating narrative of a very fluid time in aviation history.
