If we lose the war in space, then we lose and we lose quickly. The critical importance of space to today's armed forces may not yet justify Field Marshal Montgomery's famous quote about air power but it is not far off.Speaking at the Royal Aeronautical Society on 27 March to mark the 100 anniversary of the Royal Air Force, current Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier said: "In an era when the global networks we rely on are being challenged by Russia and other states, space operations have become an increasingly important part of RAF business, as natural an operating domain for our men and women as the skies and cyberspace are already. So we are growing our space situational awareness, resilience and command and control capabilities, ensuring that freedom of operation is available to all joint users of space in an increasingly complex and contested domain."
