Not too long ago, the term "configuration management" was most often associated with checking in and checking out engineering drawings. When these drawings were based on velum or paper, they were taken out of a secure drawer, and either the checker or the designer had to initial any changes made to a drawing. With the addition of CAD drawings, the process changed slightly. Originally these electronic drawings were printed out (usually on a flatbed plotter) or viewed from the computer.
