The Airbus A310 is awarded its certificate of airworthiness from the German and French aviation authorities. Two weeks later, on March 29, Airbus delivers the first two A310-200s to Lufthansa and Swissair. Based on the larger A300, the A310 features a new wing and is designed to carry 220 passengers in mixed-class seating along short to medium length routes.
