Although it is only about 60% complete, astronauts say it can be seen from miles away. As they approach aboard their visiting spacecraft, it looms out of the eternal orbital darkness like a giant construction site-which in a sense it is. As of last June it weighed nearly a quarter of a million pounds, held nearly 15,000 ft3 of volume, and spanned more than 230 ft along its center truss backbone. But as big and impressive as it might look to visitors, the International Space Station is still a work in progress.
