The de havilland Comet 4 (G-APDB) in which HRH Prince Philip flew from London to Ottawa on October 28-29 set up an unofficial record for commercial aircraft for the westbound Atlantic crossing. The 3,400-mile flight was made non-stop in 8hr 29min at an average speed of 400 m.p.h. His Royal Highness returned to RAF Leuchars from Gander on November 1, the Comet taking 4hr 5min for the 2,200-mile flight.
