Air Gunner Junkers Ju 52

Once it became clear that the Dornier Do 11 was inadequate as a bomber, the Luftwaffe brought the transport/airliner Ju 52/3m into use as a Behelfskampfflugzeug (auxiliary bomber), creating the specialised sub-variants Ju 52/3mge andju 52/3mg3e and -4e. These sub-:ypes were fitted with a set of 'three 500kg cells allowing vertically-stowed bombs and, in addition to the dorsal position, they included a retractable ventral Bombenzielstand (bomb aimers' pulpit) where a gunner/ bomb-aimer would stand. This unwieldy unit was manually winched up against the fuselage underside to create ground clearance for take-off and landing.
