By the outbreak of the First World War, in August 1914, the Sopwith Aviation Company of Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, was a leading British aircraft manufacturer. Its most outstanding product was the diminutive Tabloid single-seat scout, but the early war years saw the appearance of a number of lesser-known products, includingtheType 807 Folder seaplane, based on the company's entry for the abandoned Daily Mall Circuit of Britain contest, and its landplane derivative, the Tandem Two-Seater Scout that, owing to its tendency to spin, became known as the "Spinning Jenny". Both types were built in limited numbers for the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), but had indifferent performance.
