摘要

In 1929 SIR Alan Cobham spent 21 weeks touring the British Isles in de Havilland D.H.61 Giant Moth G-AAEV Youth of Britain. He visited no fewer than 110 towns, his principal aim being to persuade their civic dignitaries and planners that they ought to establish local aerodromes if they wanted to keep their towns in the van of progress, and "boost British trade". In addition, to foster airmindedness, Cobham gave "authorities and leaders of commerce" flights over their towns, and in 5,000 flights carried a grand total of 50,000 passengers. Numbered among these were 10,000 schoolchildren who flew free of charge, their flights being paid for by Lord Wakefield, the Castrol oil magnate, though at the time he was described as an "anonymous donor".
