Crosswind

A landmark in German aviation history was last October's closure of Berlin's historic Tempelhof airport. Sited within the city centre, as indicated by its Zentral Flughafen title, and long since surrounded by high-rise buildings, the airport originally opened in 1923. It was greatly extended between 1936 and 1941, from futuristic designs by one of Hitler's favourite architects, Ernst Sagebiel.rnBuilt in a sweeping crescent of nearly three-quarters of a mile, its grandiose monolithic limestone terminal buildings eventually spanned two parallel 6,000ft tarmac runways.
