As its title implies, this is a book about the earliest days of flying up until the First World War with a few postwar reflections. The author was in a unique position to record those days - he was a journalist writing for The Times, The Daily Telegraph and other newspapers before becoming editor of Aeronautics magazine. He knew everyone in the "flying fraternity who were so indomitably cheerful - they had to be, because flying was really dangerous". He attended all the meetings and events and kept extensive diaries and records.
