I had long forgotten just how much it alarmed me as a child. As his Spitfire hurtled towards the ground, the pilot tried to bale out - only to find his right foot trapped in the rudder bar! This powerful image had stayed in my mind ever since. It is rare for a scene in any film to achieve such lasting effect. Indeed, it is pretty unusual for a film itself to endure so long in the popular memory. Yet few have done so quite like Reach for the Sky, made way back in 1955.
