Racing the Sun

The convair 880 was built in the company's factory, known as Plant One, at San Diego, California. Of stressed-skin construction, it had a low-set wing with 35° degree sweep at 30 per cent chord. The cutting of metal started in June 1957 with the machining of the outerwing spar booms, which were made from2024-T3 light alloy. The same material was used for the lower wing skin and stringers, while 7075-T6 was used for the upper skin.
