On january 18 at the German Embassy in Washington, DC, the founder of the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation (BAHF), Timothy Chopp, was presented with the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic by the German Ambassador, Klaus Scharioth. Chopp formed the BAHF in 1988, and ten years later brought the organisation's Douglas C-54 Skymaster to Europe for the airlift 50th anniversary celebrations (seeJuly 1998 Aeroplane). The Floyd Bennett Field, Newjersey-based C-54 is fitted out as an airborne museum, and continues to tour the USA during the show season.
