In thetradition of the bbmf's policy of using paint schemes representing actual aircraft and their pilots who saw active service during the Second World War, the decision was made to give TE311 the 74 Sqn markings of Spitfire XVITB675/4D-V flown by CO Sqn LdrTony Reeves DFC. Also in keeping with policy, the fighter retains its own original serial number, not that of the aircraft it represents. Formed at Northolt on July 1,1917, 74 Sqn began life as a training unit, but was soon promoted to be a front-line squadron. On March 20 it was sent over to France, flying the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a. Within a short time the squadron earned the nickname the "Tigers", owing to the ferocity and courage of its men.
