The harrier's entry into service came on April 1, 1969. The first task for the RAF was to train the nucleus I of Harrier instructors, and so a Harrier Conversion Team (HCT) was set up at Dunsfold, consisting of four experienced pilots: Sqn Ldr Dick Lebrocq with Fit Lts Peter Dodworth, Bruce Latton and Richie Profit. Under the tutelage of Duncan Simpson, sometimes flying chase in a Hunter, these four officers completed their conversions by the end of May, the HCT then decamping to the Harrier Conversion Unit (HCU) at RAF Wittering, Cambridgeshire, to prepare more instructors and to train the first squadron pilots.
