This study of a bombed-up Hawker Hurricane lib undergoing rearmament and servicing is of more than passing interest. The horizontal glareshield plate high on the nose between the Rolls-Royce Merlin's exhaust stubs and the cockpit canopy show that it is an ex-nightfighter, and it has 12-gun armament. More intriguing, however are the markings chalked on the nose, in the form of pairs of vertical lines with wavy lines and the letter "W" between them. On the reverse of the photograph is an RAF stamp to which the initials "FPU", the date "5/7/42" and the reference "RE.17.32" have been added. What is it all about?
