My "Hairy Moment" happened when I was serving with an Army unit called the Joint Experimental Helicopter Unit (JEHU). This was during November 1956 while on board the aircraft carrier HMS Ocean with our eight Westland Whirlwinds and six Bristol Sycamores. I was a helicopter crewman, and on November 6 it was decided to attack Port Said in Egypt to regain control of the Canal during the "Suez Crisis" campaign. HMS Ocean was sailing with its sister ship HMS Theseus, which had ten Fleet Air Arm Whirlwinds on board. Both ships were carrying fully equipped Royal Marine Commandos. For media reasons, my unit was renamedJHU, dropping the word "Experimental".
