Museum to record war-winning radar triumphs

Buildings at the site occupied by the Telecommunications Flying Unit (TFU) at RAF Defford, South Worcestershire, from 1942-57 are currently being restored by the National Trust and the Defford Airfield Heritage Group. Built partially in the grounds of Croome Park - the ancestral seat of the Earls of Coventry - Defford was the national centre for airborne radar research and development in the UK, and one of the most secret and closely guarded sites in the country. The trials involved a vast range of aircraft types, with almost every operational type used by the Allies represented. In many cases, successful trials resulted in orders to the Telecommunications Research Establishment (TFU's parent unit) to manufacture and equip aircraft with urgently needed new radar equipment for operational use, prior to full scale production.
