Bat Boat 100

The centenary of the maiden flight of the first successful flying-boat built and flown in Britain, the Sopwith Bat Boat, is to be commemorated in two exhibitions on the Isle of Wight during the spring and summer of this year. From March 25 until early June, the East Cowes Heritage Centre will feature a display on the T.O.M. Sopwith designed machine, and from June 8-September 28 a larger exhibition will be open at the Classic Boat Museum Gallery at East Cowes. Centrepiece of the museum exhibition will be a specially commissioned 1/8th scale museum quality model of the Bat Boat, which will have a wingspan of around 5ft and is now under construction by local model maker Tony Saunders of Marine Models.
