By the mid 1920s the competition to become the first to fly around the world was hotting up. In April 1922, Royal Australian Air Force Captain Ross Smith and Lieutenant James Bennett died when their Vickers Viking amphibian aircraft crashed at Byfleet, Surrey while testing for their planned circumnavigation. Yet just a month later, on May 23, British Army Major Wilfred T Blake, RAF Captain Norman Macmillan and British Army Lt Col LE Broome departed Croydon in a modified Airco DH.9 (G-EBDE) to start their first attempt at the record.
