This handsome all-colour book on one of the most popular post-war fighters will be welcomed by all Phantom buffs. The author is well-known for a number of authoritative aviation books and provides an excellent selection of illustrations, with line drawings by Richard J. Carauna. The story begins with the first Phantom, the McDonnell FH-1, soon joined by the F2H Banshee and the F3H Demon, the last suffered with a poor engine, the Westinghouse, until it was re-engined with the Allison J71, but the Demon was a recognisable forerunner for the F-4 Phantom. As development continued, it became apparent that McDonnell had a winner, establishing height and speed records -98,560ft and 1,390 m.p.h. (not both at the same time obviously!) while climb-to-height times were also remarkable, but the development programme was not without casualties.
