O liver Manners Sutton was the fourth son of A.C. and Mrs W.A. Sutton of Tunbridge Wells, Kent, although he was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, on March 13, 1896. He was educated at Tonbridge School between 1910 and 1913, and the Central Technical College in South Kensington during the last year before the First World War began, as an engineering student. He enlisted into the 19th (2nd Public School) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, in September 1914, and was commissioned into the 1 st Battalion of the Royal North Lancashire Regiment, serving in the trenches in France from May 1915. However, he was both gassed and wounded in September during the Battle of Loos and the next month, after hospital treatment, he was evacuated to England.
