Carrier 'Ops' HMS Furious Carrier landing pioneer

HMS Furious was originally laid down on June 15, 1915, by Armstrong Whitworth (Low Walker) of Wallsend, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, as one of three purpose-built battle cruisers designed to support the First Sea Lord of Admiralty, Lord John Fisher's ambitious "Baltic Project". Built for speed, Furious had a shallow draft, was lightly armoured and its only main weapons were a pair of BL (Breech-Loading) 18in guns in separate turrets and 11 BL 5.5in Mk I guns, but the ship was capable of just under 32kts.
