Established when the chill of the Cold War began to take hold, Air Defence Command (ADC) came about because of the Soviets' ability to launch long-range bomber operations against the US mainland, thanks to the appearance of the Tupolev Tu-4 Bull (a copy of the B-29) in 1947. At first, the ADC, equipped with F-51 s and F-47s, proved to be ineffective during exercises involving USAF B-29s. However, the radar-equipped P-61 Black Widow could not only locate the "enemy" bombers but also intercept them. A great aircraft in its own right, the P-61 was a war-weary machine by 1948, so the all-weather interceptor versions of the Twin Mustang stepped up to the plate.
