Close co-operation with Short Brothers inevitably led de Havilland into fitting a DH60 Moth with a 'float chassis' in November 1926. The airframe selected was No 273, carried by lorry to Shorts' Rochester works on the River Medway where two duralumin floats originally designed for the Short Mussel were attached. The airframe had been modified for its nautical role by the introduction of stainless steel fittings, and the leading edges of the lower mainplanes were sheeted with three-ply for added durability.
