Supermarine: An Illustrated History

The story of Reginald Mitchell and the aircraft of Supermarine - flying boats, Schneider Trophy racers and the Spitfire - illustrated with images from the Solent Sky Museum. There can hardly be a more evocative subject nor, indeed, a better starting-point for an aviation title aimed at the true British enthusiast. C. F. Andrews and E. B. Morgan long ago produced what was remains the definitive history of Supermarine in their 'Supermarine Aircraft since 1914' (Putnam, 1981). What we have here is an altogether smaller, chattier, more approachable volume, which begs to be read from cover to cover, penned by Solent Sky's historian Christopher Smith. As such, there is more background material, more illustrations and less detail, making the two titles in many ways complementary.
