The development of an aircraft preservation movement in Britain was not the work of a moment. Much of what we now take for granted, from the national level down, needed time to grow. In the early post-World War Two years, collections dedicated to aviation were few and far between — and those that did exist were not generally accessible. Appearances at events, where they would mix with the historic aircraft then still preserved by manufacturers, were practically the only way to see their aeroplanes. It seems a world away now.
