摘要

It is difficult to argue with the dust jacket's statement that, "The Fieseler Storch is the most famous slow-speed aircraft of the Second World War". Much in the manner of the London taxi driver who boasts of 'who I had in the back of my cab', the Storch can count as passengers Hitler, Speer and Mussolini, not to mention Churchill (in a captured example, for a breakfast meeting with generals after D-Day). As an outstanding First World War fighter pilot, Gerhard Fieseler achieved 19 - or 21: accounts differ - aerial victories in Macedonia during 1917-18. Being what might today be called a total aviation person, Fieseler took up aerobatics, becoming world champion in Paris in June 1934 in his Fieseler F5. He had already bought an aircraft manufacturer in April 1930; it had been renowned as a producer of gliders, but under new management he directed it towards the production of sporting aircraft. The Storch was thus certainly not the company's only design, but it was surely the best-known.
