More power for RAF Thunderbolts? Q Prompted by the recent item on RAF Thunderbolt operations (Database, Aeroplane June 2020), Graham Wilburn recalls conversations with a former pilot who flew the type in Burma. He said, just before each sortie, pilots were issued with pieces of Perspex shaped to fit inside the throttle box, thereby increasing the performance. Graham presumes that when the throttle was moved forward it caused the boost and/or rpm levers to move and maintain certain ratios, but if the engineers had produced something that allowed these to be overridden, surely this would have changed the fuel flow, which could conflict with air density/ temperature and humidity? He wonders whether anyone else has heard about this ad hoc initiative by RAF engineers, and was it used or passed down from US Army Air Forces-flown P-47s?
