This is the history of fly-by-wire (FBW) in the UK, covering the period from the Rolls-Royce Thrust Measuring Rig - the 'Flying Bedstead' to its friends - through to the VAAC Harrier, XW175, the final dedicated British FBW research aircraft. The author reviews the seven major aircraft types used in FBW research and development programmes as well as giving the background on RAE Bedford, which is where most of the relevant work was done. His text explains well FBW systems, their development and their evaluation, as well as the differing opinions as to the best way forward.
