Perhaps surprisingly, the Finnish Air Force (llmavoimat) selected the lightweight, single-seat Folland Gnat as its new jet fighter following an evaluation in 1956 that pitched it against the more conventional, and 'full-sized', Hawker Hunter. This outcome was surely influenced by the limited Finnish defence budget; in their introduction, the authors note the fact that 12 Gnats could be bought for the price of six Hunters. Thirteen Gnats were ordered but delivery was delayed by almost a year, and it was 30 July 1958 before the first two examples touched down at Luonetjaervi.
