In the past ten years, there had been an increasing in the use of the molecular marker for the study of genetic diversity, genome mapping, marker-added selections in plant. Several types of molecular markers such as restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), random amplified polymorphism DNA (RAPD), microsatellite or simple sequence repeats (SSR), and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) have been developed. The PCR-based markers such as SSR and AFLP have shown great promising in study genetic diversity, genome mapping, and gene tagging because they are technically simple, time-saving, high informative and required small amount of DNA. In this paper, we report the results on the use of AFLP for the study of genetic diversity in Vietnamese upland rice. Fifteen AFLP primer combinations were used to amplify genomic DNA of twelve upland rice accessions collected from northern border provinces of Vietnam. Based on AFLP polymorphism, the upland rice accessions were grouped in two main groups and proved to be very divergent. The obtained results showed that the investigated upland rice are good materials for breeding and genetic study.
