Study of Dependence of Coverage Pattern of Ad-hoc Network on Communication Range of Individual Nodes

Recent advances in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have seen increasing popularity in variety of applications. A wireless sensor network may be formed of thousands of sensor nodes. Many of the nodes are at times redundant and therefore offer a cost, energy and maintenance overhead on the entire system. Each node has sensing capability and communication capability. The sensor nodes are mostly battery operated and hence have limited energy. It is observed that over the time period, the power of the node decreases. This reduction depends upon whether the node is transmitting or receiving or is idle. As the power decreases the range of communication will also decrease and it may affect the network pattern. This paper reports the study of: 1. Coverage pattern of the network with all nodes having same range of communication. Here we have considered different ranges for the same network and studied the patterns. 2. Network with three different types of nodes with different power requirements. There ranges are obviously different. We have studied patterns of such type of network. 3. Deployment of the sensor network with redundancy and optimum number of nodes. The research reported in this paper provides and insight into selection of pattern for available communication range and number of nodes. Further it will be possible to identify redundant nodes in the network. The user can select the network pattern as per the required confidence level.
