Indoor localization system is one of many trendy services that fall within the framework of Smart Buildings and the Internet of Things development. The Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) technology has tremendously contributed to this field of research especially in the development of low-cost solutions. The wireless nodes in the indoor localization platforms are becoming battery-powered to overcome the high costs of wired power supply and to maintain high installation flexibility in dynamic indoor environments. Since the battery has a limited energy capacity, it is important to find methods to optimize the power consumption within the sensor node. To increase the battery lifetime, the wireless node must be maintained as long as possible at its lowest power consumption level which is called sleep mode.This article presents an energy-efficient on-demand protocol for the WSN-based indoor localization platform. In this protocol, the wireless nodes are maintained in a low power idle listening mode using low power built-in Wake-Up receiver and they are activated only when a localization request occurs. This method permits to optimize the activity time of the wireless node and extends its battery lifetime. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
