On July 20, 2009 we celebrated the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11. The occasion called for a considered approach to our future in space if not on scientific merit, then for geopolitical reasons. President Barack Obama expressed support of manned spacefiight by appointing General Charles Bolden, a former astronaut, to head NASA. Next, he appointed Norman Augustine, former CEO of Lockheed Martin, to lead a panel to set new goals for future space endeavors, as reported in this magazine.
