Whilst the transhipment mega-hub of Gioia Tauro grabbed all of the headlines in 1998, many of Italy's other ports had similarly impressive years. the Italian port of Genoa reported a total traffic volume of 46 million tonnes in 1998, an increase of 5.7% on the previous year. Whilst the port's solid bulk volume increased by 2.1% and its liquid bulk throughput was up by 1.6%, Genoa's container throughput surged by 7.3% to 1.26 million TEU and the throughput figure is estimated to reach 1.45 million TEU this year (an increase of 15%).
