Despite being known as the number one greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide as a refrigerant is proving to be a major force in protecting the climate.rn"Carbon dioxide used as a refrigerant is derived from existing, mainly natural sources", says Monika Witt, Chairwoman of Eurammon, the European initiative for natural refrigerants. "More than 90% comes from fermentation processes, mainly breweries, with the remaining 10% generated as waste in chemical production, for example in the production of carbonates. The energy required for these procedures and the resulting carbon emissions are so low compared to those generated in global industrial processes that they are practically negligible."
